MacDermid Offshore Solutions signs contract to supply new oceanic environmental control fluid

March 22, 2022

MacDermid Offshore Solutions, a provider of high-performance and environmentally-friendly products for the offshore oil and gas industry, has entered into a contract with a major service company in Brazil to provide biodegradable production control hydraulic fluid, Oceanic Environmental Control Fluid (ECF), for subsea equipment in the North Sea.

Oceanic ECF will be used with equipment such as Christmas trees, manifolds, subsea control modules and umbilicals, and will be manufactured at MacDermid’s Jandira, Sao Paulo plant in Brazil and supplied to the client’s local facility.

The contract will be a one-time supply, with a total duration of approximately 60 days, comprising raw-materials acquisition, manufacture, testing and delivery. The end user, a major operator, will deploy Oceanic ECF in a field in the North Sea.

Dan Gaspard, director of subsea products, MacDermid, said, “This contract represents the first batch of our newly developed, environmentally-friendly, biodegradable hydraulic fluid to be produced in Brazil. Oceanic ECF is a breakthrough technology in terms of production control chemicals formulation, and is qualified according to the most up-to-date and rigorous environmental standards. This contract highlights MacDermid’s ability to deliver solutions that satisfy our clients’ demand for environmental sustainability.”

The new water-based fluid technology features forward and reverse material compatibility, which delivers outstanding lubrication, anti-wear properties, anti-corrosion properties, broad tolerance to brines, seawater contamination and microbial resistance. Oceanic ECF is a fluid that is robust enough to last 20 to 30 years inside a subsea system and when discharged, will biodegrade completely within 28 to 60 days, ensuring no persistent chemicals remain.
