Caterpillar's Tier 4 system saves pressure pumping operators 100 million gallons of diesel
(WO) — Pressure pumping operators across North America reduced diesel use by approximately 100 million gallons in 2023, thanks to Caterpillar Oil & Gas' Cat Tier 4 Dynamic Gas Blending (DGB) system. This data, collected via telemetry from connected assets, highlights significant fuel savings for operators using the dual-fuel blending system.
Caterpillar introduced the Tier 4 DGB system in 2019 to help operators cut fuel consumption and costs. In 2023, the system achieved an average diesel displacement rate of 60%, with peaks reaching up to 85%. Based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s diesel price of $4.21 per gallon, operators saved hundreds of millions of dollars over the year.
“As oil and gas companies seek ways to reduce fuel consumption and costs while meeting energy demands, our Tier 4 DGB system plays a key role in achieving those goals,” said Derek Kamp, vice president and general manager of Caterpillar Oil & Gas.
In addition to lowering fuel costs, the Tier 4 DGB system meets U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final standards and provides advanced diagnostics to prevent costly operational disruptions.
