February 14, 2025

Energy NL joins members of the energy sector and all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians as we remember the tragic loss of 84 crew members of the Ocean Ranger.

“Reflecting on the 43rd year since the tragic loss of 84 crew members of the Ocean Ranger, we are once again reminded of the harsh realities of working offshore," said Charlene Johnson, Energy NL CEO. "As we remember those lost and the long-lasting impact upon their loved ones, we also recognize the ongoing commitment within our industry to prioritize the safety of all who work in the energy sector, both offshore and onshore. This commitment honors the memory of the 84 lives lost in the Ocean Ranger tragedy and ensures they are never, ever, forgotten.”

The annual memorial service organized by Gonzaga High School occurred at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist in St. John’s on Wednesday, February 12. Charlene Johnson was honored to attend on behalf of the Newfoundland and Labrador energy supply and service sector.

The Ocean Ranger semi-submersible drill rig sank on February 15, 1982, while exploring on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. All 84 crew members perished.
