HOT FBEs for pipelines enable deeper offshore drilling extractions
As deeper wells bring higher extraction temperatures to subsea oil and gas assets, older pipeline coating technologies are unable to keep pace with these high temperature exposures. Above their design temperatures, the coatings may lose physical properties, resulting in potential degradation, loss of adhesion, disbondment and ultimately premature failure.
By balancing interconnected performance properties, newer HOT Pipeclad® FBE coatings from Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine address these risk through the following advancements:
- Accommodating pipeline temperatures up to 200°C (392°F)
- Maintaining a high degree of flexibility, allowing installers to spool and reel-lay pipelines
- Providing a strong barrier against water, electrolytes oxygen and other corrosion contributors
- Offering higher Tg values to deliver better damage resistance to impacts, gouges and abrasions
“The balance newer HOT Pipeclad FBEs provide between higher glass transition temperatures and better flexibility, barrier properties and damage resistance is enabling offshore exploration into untapped areas, deeper well drilling and hotter material extractions,” said Dr. Jeffrey David Rogozinski, Global Product Director – Fusion-Bonded Epoxy/Pipe for Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine.
“These are all welcome capabilities for the subsea market, especially since further HOT FBE advancements will enable the coatings to handle even higher temperatures in the future,” Added Rogozinski.
