Baker Hughes, Sentinel Subsea successfully deploy “ground-breaking” subsea technology in the Americas
(WO) – Sentinel Subsea, specialists in passive subsea integrity monitoring, has successfully deployed several of its proprietary WellSentinel wellhead systems in the Americas. These ground-breaking deployments took place through the successful collaboration with Baker Hughes to deliver passive solutions to the global energy market.
Recognizing the complex nature of offshore asset operation within the challenging subsea environment, Sentinel Subsea has developed and pioneered passive monitoring technologies to support effective integrity management of complex subsea assets and infrastructure.
The simple-to-deploy WellSentinel technology is designed to provide continuous remote monitoring for a range of subsea assets. The passive innovation is pre-set to chemically detect a particular fluid and nothing else it may encounter in the subsea environment.
Upon detection, this mechanically releases an alert beacon to the ocean’s surface. This entire subsea detection process is achieved without the use of active power or subsea data communication of any kind. Once at the surface, the individually asset-coded alert beacon activates and communicates via satellite to notify the asset owner of a potential issue.
With successful trials already carried out in the North Sea, these deployments signify the firm’s ongoing global expansion involving the successful offshore deployment of several WellSentinel technologies to the Gulf of Mexico and Brazil region.
Collaborating with Baker Hughes has seen the delivery and deployment of WellSentinel Coral wellhead solutions for two oil and gas operators. The systems were successfully installed onto various subsea wellheads and are currently providing cost-effective, environmentally friendly passive monitoring of the assets within the mature fields at varying water depths and profile sizes.
Neil Gordon, CEO, Sentinel Subsea, said, “These projects showcase the global opportunities for our passive technology - we are committed to supporting the industry to lower risk, reduce costs and protect the environment. Our collaboration with Baker Hughes brings together a leading team of experts and a global capability to deliver advanced integrity monitoring solutions internationally – we have a clear aim of supporting the industry manage the risks associated with subsea operations as we work towards a clean energy industry.”
Based in Aberdeen, Sentinel Subsea was founded in 2018 and currently has a team of seven. In 2021, the company appointed industry veteran Ray Riddoch OBE as chairman.
