STAVANGER, Norway -- Statoil has decided to cancel its Stena Carron rig contract after fulfilling its work commitments in the Statoil-operated blocks 38 and 39 in the Kwanza basin, offshore Angola. The rig contract will cease with effect from Nov. 21, 2014.

THE HAGUE, The Netherlands -- Mazarine Energy Tunisia, a subsidiary of Mazarine Energy has signed a drilling contract with Compagnie Tunisienne de Forage (CTF) for the use of the CTF-4, a 2,000 horsepower onshore drilling rig, for a two-well drilling campaign in the Zaafrane permit in central Tunisia.

HOUSTON -- Apache Corp. is to sell over 200,000 net acres in southern Louisiana and the Anadarko basin in two separate transactions, the company has announced. According to G. Steven Farris, Apache’s chairman, president and CEO, proceeds from the $1.4 billion sale of the non-core assets will, primarily, be used to fund leasehold acquisitions that the company made this year.

STAVANGER, Norway (Bloomberg) -- Sanctions are forcing Exxon Mobil Corp. to look for alternative assignments for an offshore rig supposed to sail back to the Russian Arctic next summer. West Alpha, the rig owned by billionaire John Fredriksen’s North Atlantic Drilling Ltd. that made a billion-barrel oil discovery for Exxon and OAO Rosneft in the Kara Sea in September, could end up operating offshore Norway instead of going back to Russia in 2015, said Dominic Genetti, operations manager for Exxon in Norway.

CALGARY, Alberta (Bloomberg) -- Facing a 30% slide in the price of crude in the past five months, Encana Corp. CEO Doug Suttles still has his foot on the accelerator. The gas giant capped a year of asset sales and purchases worth more than $14 billion to focus more on crude, just as oil fell into a slump. Suttles remains confident in the shift and plans to expand drilling to capitalize on properties that promise higher returns, even after crude prices declined from a high in June of about $107/bbl to around $75.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (Bloomberg) -- Nils Smedegaard Andersen, the CEO of A.P. Moeller-Maersk A/S, says today’s oil price isn’t a problem for companies with the scope to continue cutting costs. “It’s more difficult to make money on oil if the price is $80/bbl than when it was $120/bbl,” he said Nov. 11 in a phone interview. “But historically $80 is a great price so it’s a matter of costs having to come down.”
