Conventionally, African exploration has been focused in Nigeria, Egypt and Libya; most other frontiers were either underexplored or not explored at all. However, in recent times Africa has been the hot spot for exploration activity, mostly concentrated in West Africa, offshore Mozambique and Tanzania, and the East African rift system in Kenya and Uganda, as well as the opening of new carbonate plays in the Nile Delta.

Statoil and partners have made an oil discovery in the Verbier sidetrack well in the outer Moray Firth on the UK Continental Shelf, proving a minimum of 25 million recoverable barrels of oil in the immediate vicinity of the wellbore.

Gazpromneft-Sakhalin, a subsidiary of Gazprom Neft, has completed drilling of a prospecting and appraisal well at its Ayashsky license block, located on the continental shelf of the Okhotsk Sea. As a result, a new hydrocarbon field has been discovered, with initial in-place reserves estimated at 255 million tonnes of oil equivalent (MMtoe).

Gazprom Neft and PTT, Thailand’s largest oil and gas company, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU), promoting mutually-beneficial cooperation between the two companies. The document was signed by Alexander Dyukov, CEO of Gazprom Neft, and Tevin Vongvanich, president of PTT.

Petrobras reports that it acquired seven blocks in the 14th Round of Bids under the Shared Production regime, held yesterday by the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), six of which offshore and one onshore. The company will be the operator in all blocks, including the offshore blocks, where Petrobras will hold 50% participation, in partnership with ExxonMobil.
